Welcome the Hartford Colonials to the United Football League

The Hartford Colonials will proudly carry the name of the state capital of Connecticut and reflect the region’s long and distinguished history when they kick off the second United Football League season at Rentschler Field in the fall of 2010.

The Colonials was the name chosen by sports fans in Hartford and surrounding areas through a ‘Your Town, Your Team, Your Name – You Make The Call’ promotion to name the UFL team. The promotion ran in association with Tribune companies FOX 61 News, the Hartford Courant and CTNow.com.

“We truly did listen to the public and the fans who will to chant the Colonials name from the stands at Rentschler Field,” said United Football League Commissioner Michael Huyghue. “Colonials was not among the four names available when we asked people to vote online, and that is why we added a fifth option to suggest an alternative and that is exactly what happened. Colonials soon emerged as the overwhelming favorite.”

    UFL Commissioner Targets Expansion
    18 March 2010

Professional American football could have a permanent base in London within the next three years, according to United Football League (UFL) commissioner Michael Huyghue. The UFL, which is about to enter its second year in the United States, has grand plans to expand and the organisation is looking at basing a team on the other side of the Atlantic. With the National Football League (NFL) having staged regular-season games in London for the previous three years, Huyghue is hopeful of building on these foundations by bringing a team to the United Kingdom, with London being the probable destination.

“For two years for now we’ve had a group that we’ve sent over there to do research for us,” The Sport Briefing. “We have sent a group over to do evaluations and they are monitoring everything that is going on there, so it has been an ongoing evaluation for us. We have done a number of research projects on sites, stadia, venues and pitches at cricket facilities and soccer stadia, so we feel very strongly that the UK is going to be the host of the first European city that we go to. We may go to Canada first, but the three cities we’re looking at outside the USA are in Mexico, Canada and the UK. In our next three years of planning there is no question that we’re interested in going into those markets.

The UFL commissioner held a series of meetings in the UK, Germany and Spain last summer and he confirmed that London would be one of the proposed host cities for a permanent team. Huyghue also left the door ajar for a possible future collaboration with the NFL, North America’s premier competition. “I think it (the UFL) is a holding place for more professional football that will be a televisual product on non-NFL nights,” he said. “I think it is just going to fill the void in terms of venues, nights, cities and players that currently aren’t playing in the NFL. Whether that leads to some merger down the road, who knows, but I think as an independent alternative league I think there is a place for the UFL.”

The NFL already enjoys significant exposure in the UK and the league will host its fourth annual international series game when the San Francisco 49ers take on the Denver Broncos at Wembley Stadium on October 31. The regular-season games have been seen as successes in the UK with attendances of more than 80,000 for each edition. NFL UK boss Alistair Kirkwood admitted after last year’s event that games are being planned at different UK cities, including Cardiff and Edinburgh.

UFL puts 30 percent offer on NFL's table

Welcome the Sacramento Mountain Lions to the United Football League
    UFL Press - April 06, 2010

Sacramento, your United Football league team that will kick off the 2010 fall season at Hornet Stadium in the state capital has a new name – the Mountain Lions.

The Mountain Lions was one of the most popular names suggested by sports fans in Sacramento through a ‘Your Town, Your Team, Your Name – You Make The Call’ promotion to name the UFL team, which ran on the league’s official website http://www.UFL-Football.com in association with Northern California’s Sports Station KHTK 1140 AM.

“Again we have listened to the fans of the UFL by selecting a nickname that proved most popular in an online vote to give one of our teams a strong and regional identity,” said United Football League Commissioner Michael Huyghue. “There were many suggestions and opinions for names with a local flavor and this proved to be the most popular and the most dynamic.”

Mountain lions live in many different types of habitat in California, from deserts to humid coast range forest, and from sea level to 10,000-foot elevations. There are an estimated 4,000 to 6,000 mountain lions in the state.

The Sacramento Mountain Lions will be led by head coach Dennis Green, who in his first United Football League season led the former California Redwoods to a 2-4 record. His returning running back Cory Ross, who is among 20 players protected by the Mountain Lions, led the league in rushing with 462 yards in 2009.

“I am excited at the prospect of running onto the field at Hornet Stadium with a vibrant name and logo of the Mountain Lions on my chest,” said coach Green. “You can come up with all the clichés you like to tell the fans in Sacramento that we will be as agile, fast, powerful and dare I say it, as predatory as Mountain Lions, when we take on our opponents in the United Football League this season.”

Three randomly drawn entrants who were among those who suggested the Mountain Lions name will be unveiled as the inaugural “UFL Foundation Fans”. They will receive some great ‘Ultimate Fan Experience’ prizes of four suite passes, and four on-field pre-game passes for a home game, an opportunity to meet coach Green on the field during pre-game and PA recognition during the game.

Group and season tickets to Sacramento Mountain Lions games will go on sale in April and the team’s new logo and uniforms will also be unveiled in the coming months. Sports fans can call 916-233-4870 for more information about the Mountain Lions. The team will also launch a new website in April.

    Zitat

As an FYI this is "phase one" of the new site, phase two will launch in a few weeks and will include:

    - revamped player profiles
    - an all-new stats page and stats engine
    - further enhancements to the team pages
    - a revamped schedule
    - a great new video on demand gallery
    ...and more.

We will also likely have a fantasy game that will launch closer to the season, more info on that to be announced later on.

When I die and go to hell, hell will be a Brett Favre
game, announced by the ESPN Sunday night crew,
    for all eternity. Paul Zimmerman

    Omaha Welcomes the Nighthawks
May 5, 2010 by UFL Press

Wednesday, May 5, 2010 – The Omaha franchise of the United Football League will proudly kick off the 2010 season with a name for fans to cheer from the stands at Rosenblatt Stadium – the Nighthawks.

The name was announced jointly by 1620 The Zone, Omaha’s ESPN Radio, Omaha.com, the Omaha World Herald and UFL-Football.com following a promotion encouraging football fans to suggest their favorite name for the Omaha team.

The ‘Your Town, Your Team, Your Name – You Make The Call’ initiative produced a record response of more than 9,000 entries and the name Nighthawks emerged as the winner.

“I think it is a fantastic name and I am proud and excited to be able to tell people I am the head coach of the Omaha Nighthawks,” said Jeff Jagodzinski, whose team kicks off the 2010 UFL season at home to the Hartford Colonials on Friday, September 24.

“I know people wanted a name that is dynamic and has a regional connection and I believe that is what we have. Now I can’t wait to get started playing some exciting football for the fans here in Omaha.”

The Nighthawks name encompasses several interpretations. The F-117 Nighthawks is more commonly known as the stealth fighter jet and similar aviation names proved popular with fans in the naming process. The Nighthawk is a bird of prey also known as a bull bat or Bugeater – the original nickname of the University of Nebraska. Nighthawk is also a term used to describe a cowboy who watches his herd while fending off predators and can be associated with a vibrant member of a city’s nightlife.

Es kursieren da schon recht interessante Namen: QB Daunte Culpepper (Sacramento); QB Josh McCown, QB Andre Woodson (Hartford); QB Patrick Ramsey, OT George Foster, WR Robert Ferguson, RB Ahman Green (Omaha).

Culpepper is reunited with Dennis Green, so he might be worth a high pick in any leagues full of people depraved enough to play fantasy UFL.
