He is only 35, but Parker's short-term memory resembles someone much older. He is so forgetful that he has to write down routine things such as needing to make a trip to the grocery store. He often takes pictures and videos with his phone to remember how to do things such as use tools in his woodworking and metal shop.

    Zitat

Jahvid Best is suing the NFL, alleging the league "knew about the risks of head injuries suffered by players, but didn’t do enough to protect them."

Best is also suing helmet-maker Riddell. Best suffered three-known concussions during his two-year NFL career, the last of which ostensibly ended his playing days in October 2011.

    Dokumentarfilm: "Doping, Drogen, Depressionen"

    Zitat

The brain of former Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher -- the 25-year-old player who shot and killed his girlfriend in 2012 before committing suicide -- showed signs of pervasive brain damage like that found in other deceased NFL players, Steve Delsohn of ESPN reports

In a report obtained by "Outside the Lines," Dr. Piotr Kozlowski writes that he detected neurofibrillary tangles of tau protein, which is identified with chronic traumatic encephalopathy. The tangles were distributed throughout Belcher's hippocampus, an area of the brain involved with memory, learning and emotion.

Dozens of former NFL players have been diagnosed posthumously with CTE, a neurodegenerative disease linked to dementia, memory loss and depression. The disease, researchers say, is triggered by repeated head trauma.

On Dec. 1, 2012, Belcher shot and killed girlfriend Kasandra Perkins, the mother of his then-3-month-old daughter. Belcher then drove to the Chiefs' practice facility, where he shot himself in front of team officials in the parking lot. While the murder-suicide reignited the debate over athletes and guns, it also increased the focus on a frequently overlooked issue at the time: the NFL's domestic violence problem.

Belcher's body was exhumed one year after his death, and his brain was examined two weeks later. Kozlowski was hired to diagnose the brain by court-appointed Kansas City attorneys who represent the interests of Belcher's daughter. Belcher's mother, Cheryl Shepherd, initiated the process of exhuming her son's body to have his brain studied, attorney Dirk Vandever said.

Also bitte liebe Foristen...

    -----------------
It is time for us to do what we have been doing and that time is every day.

“No one was really paying a lot of attention to the concussions. Guys would get hurt, get a concussion and go right back in the game,” he said. “Now they have taken a lot more steps, a lot more tests before they get out on the field. You see it all the time, every week someone has a concussion. They’re taking the steps, making the strides to make it a better league.”

  • Former NFL linebacker Adrian Robinson, who committed suicide in May, was found have been suffering from the brain disease known as CTE, according to the Associated Press.

CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) has been found in the brains of numerous NFL players who have committed suicide, including Junior Seau and Dave Duerson. Robinson, 25, was found dead in Philadelphia in May, one month after he signed a contract with a Canadian Football League team. The coroner later determined the cause of death was suicide by hanging.

  • Protocol breakdowns prove NFL concussions problem not improving

    Zitat

It was total system failure, by any name. Four seasons after the McCoy incident that was supposed to change everything about the NFL's concussion protocol, the NFL seems to be very much at a standstill. The NFL and NFLPA scheduled a conference call with all 32 of the league's head trainers to reinforce the protocol, but the Rams were not penalized in any way for the complete and total malfeasance of that protocol—just as the Browns weren't penalized four years before.

So, what did the NFL learned from the Keenum disaster? Not much. The league had a chance to make it right the week after Keenum's incident, but again, they missed.

    ...
It would have been tough for the NFL to do a worse job of putting forth the impression that it truly cares about the head trauma-related health of its players, or that it's learned anything from past transgressions.

  • ‘Paid to Give Concussions’

    Zitat

The MMQB screened Will Smith’s upcoming drama Concussion with 70 former NFL players. For some, it was a panic-inducing horror flick

    ...

Keith McCants, the fourth overall pick in the 1990 draft, drove six hours from Tampa to see the movie. When he exited the theater, he retreated to a bench in the lobby. Tear-soaked, the 47-year-old former linebacker hovered over his cane. “This touched my soul,” he said. “It was outstanding, but I can’t process it all, not right now. I watch this movie and I know we were paid to hurt people. We were paid to give concussions. If we knew that we were killing people, I would have never put on the jersey.”
