Just how much does it cost?
by OSR StaffCOLUMBIA, Mo. - Ever find yourself getting agitated at the rising cost of tickets, parking fees or concessions at your favorite team's sporting events? It's certainly natural, but as with any other industry, the cost of putting out a high-quality athletic program goes up almost every year, whether it's at the collegiate or professional level.
One aspect of fielding a football program that is very costly is what it takes to properly outfit a team on game day. Mizzou OSR recently caught up with Mizzou's Director of Equipment Operations Don Barnes to get a feel for what it takes to suit up his 125 players each Saturday.
Barnes estimates that when everything he furnishes is considered - from helmet to jersey, shoes to shoulder pads and everything else from head to toe - it costs anywhere from $2,000 on the low end all the way up to $3,800 on the high end... PER PLAYER.
Here's Barnes' breakdown:
Custom knee braces - $900
All offensive linemen and all defensive linemen are required to wear bracesCustom shoulder pads - $350
Helmet - $225
Shoes - $160
Each player has six pairs of shoes for each game to adapt to weather or surface conditionsJersey - $125
Each player has three jerseys available for each game in case of damagePants - $85
Each player has three pants available for each game in case of damageMouth guard - $65
Each player has six mouthguards available for each gameGirdles - $45
Each player has three girdles available for each gameUndershirt - $40
Knee pads - $15
Helmet decals - $12
This includes the Block 'M' on the side of MU's helmet, plus all other stiping and decalsSocks - $7
With just one item in each category, it costs $2,029 to outfit each Tiger on game day. With the maximum number of items factored in, the cost rises to $3,886. Multiply that by 125 players and it comes to a minimum of $253,625 all the way up to a whopping $485,750 in equipment and apparel that the Tigers take to the field with them each Saturday.
The above chart doesn't even include other extras, such as gloves, or thermal wear for cold-weather or rain games - nor does it include the cost of apparel, gear and equipment that Barnes and his staff provide for the Tiger coaches, trainers and other staff members totalling well over 50 people.
Kind of helps explain the need for $5 cups of soda, huh?
