"I came across an article the other day about Trubs's high school career ending in a state semifinal loss(highschoolsports.cleveland.com…l-loss-to-toledo-whitmer/)
and him openly questioning his own performance on the field. I thought
about how his college career finished out in similarly disappointing
fashion with a bowl game loss to Stanford, and how he made several
costly mistakes in that game, while in the loss to Whitmer, his
self-reproach involved botching a handoff and throwing a couple
interceptions bringing an end to an otherwise storied time at Mentor
High for Ohio's Mr. Football.
...why did Trubs choose NC in the first place? He was recruited by
Ohio State and Alabama. He had a chance to play against the very best
and be coached by the very best. He turned that down though, maybe
feeling he would no doubt win the starting job right away at NC and get
more playing time, fine tuning his skills for the pro-game and having a
better chance at being a pro sooner. Or maybe he just got along so well
with NC head coach Larry Fedora. Either way, I don't think it worked out
quite the way he planned.
he set single season passing records for NC with 30 touchdown passes
and 3748 passing yards. He also kept his interception total down to 6
and his completion percentage would be considered high at 68.2%. I don't
feel though that these numbers tell the whole story.
Of course, when you watch his tape vs. much weaker schools(like FCS
teams James Madison and The Citadel, or cellar dwellars Illinois and
Virginia) he dominates, which is what you'd expect to see. When you
watch him against Pitt, a team that finished second in the ACC, he was
also amazing, winning a player of the week award and leading a
remarkable air attack. The game does not turn my head in a sense though
as Pitt was a team that gave up 51 points to Miami, 56 to Duke, and 61
to Syracuse. They had one of the leakiest secondaries in the NCAA. They
actually finished 127th out of 128 in total defense. And let's take the
losses I've already mentioned(the Duke, NC St., and Stanford games) off
the board as selling points for Trubs since it's not really in question
that he performed insufficiently in those losses, and I'm pretty sure he
would even tell you himself that he needs to shoulder much of the blame
for those. His misreads and interceptions were very much the reason his
team was on the losing side. So looking at his football career overall
at this point, in his last 14 starts all the way back to high school, 4
were mistake filled losses, and 5 were dominant wins against less than
stellar competition. And I'm still having a hard time accepting him as a
top prospect knowing he'll make it to age 23 with such brief starting
experience.
.....
That leaves 3 starts left for Trubisky to win me over and prove that
he's a big time player, ready for the big time stage, and able to be big
time at the next level. Well against Ga. Tech, Trubs allowed his star
RB to carry the team with 168 yards and 3 touchdowns. Trubs threw 1
touchdown and made zero mistakes. It's not a bad start, but it doesn't
sell me. Against Miami, which was a 20-13 win, he was solid--over 300
yards of offense and 2 touchdowns--but I would argue Miami's front seven
was so depleted that they were playing 3rd stringers in the second
half, and with the 'Canes being in the midst of a 4 game losing streak, I
can't sell it as a quality win for Trubs. Furthermore, Marquise
Williams had led NC to a 59-21 victory(espn.com/ncf/recap/_/id/400756984)
over the U one year prior, so all these little details just seem to
detract from the review of his performance as opposed to say just
looking at the box score. And how about the Florida State game? He was
exceptional...at least in the first half. It was watching the tape of
this game that first got me to wonder though about his ability in the
clutch as he missed a crucial pass late in the game that nearly cost his
team the comeback.
Mike Mayock knocks Trubs hard for not only not returning to school,
but his questionable experience level concerning game winning drives and
the ever important situational play--""how many two-minute situations
was (Trubisky) in? How many four-minute situations when he knew he had
to bleed the clock and make calls at the line of scrimmage? I think the Sun Bowl
is a microcosm of what I’m talking about. He made two or three throws
in the last two minutes against Stanford that were big-time NFL throws.
However, in the same half, he threw a pick-six that was an awful read
and an awful throw. I just don’t think he’s ready yet."
